Aceites Toledo S.A.

From millenary tradition to food technology.

Toledo’s corporate history is directly related to the initiative of its founder and current President, Mr. Juan Rubio Navarro, who, in 1950, cultivates olive groves and raises a traditional crushing mill at Los Yébenes, in the heart of the Mountains of Toledo, starting trade operations of bulk olive oils throughout Spain.

In 2010, the company is present with its olive oils in numerous countries around the world. From our leading position in the Spanish local market as manufacturers, bottlers and suppliers of olive and vegetable oils, our tradition in the export bussiness has already cellebrated more than 25 years of trade and brand positioning in markets such as Japan, China, the U.S.A., Russia or New Zealand (in the picture below, images of container 200 kg drums loading at Los Yébenes old plant, destination C.C.C.P., late 1970's. Product: Refined Olive Oil for the fish canning industry).

Ever since the ancient times, Toledo's region has been able to produce extra virgin olive oil of exceptional quality, very well known among professional tasters of the Mediterranean as “Toledo Type”.

It is the flavour brought out by the Cornicabra olive variety, a wonderful fruit selectively nurtured in this land throughout times. By volume, Aceites Toledo is the leading company of the Denomination of Origin.

Olive cultivation was introduced in the region during the Phoenitian and Greek colonizations. At the time of the Catholic Kings, the agricultural vocation of the military orders encouraged the development of new farming techniques and trade markets. From those times, Encomienda of Monreal, belonging to the military Order of Santiago in between XII and XV centuries, is today’s Dehesa Monreal, owned by Aceites Toledo S.A. An evocative landscape at the feet of the old Monreal Castle, where beautiful centennial olive trees embrace the renowned wetland of Dehesa Monreal.

The first accounted olive oil exports from the Mountains of Toledo, in the modern times, went to France and England, at the end of the XVIII century. In the first decades of XIX c., an increase in the olive cultivated areas took place. Improvements in the yields by hectar and in the qualities of olives and resulting oils, placed the region amongst the best olive oil producing lands of its time.

The 1950’s enjoy a general activation of Spanish economy and industrial trade. New crushing mills are set and increasing investments are undertaken by regional companies such as Aceites Toledo, the leader ever since, whilst olive oil is placed as a basic product of the Spanish diet.

As of the early 1970’s, Toledo improves its packing plant at Los Yébenes, turning it into a highly efficient and exemplary operation for the times, with its own plastic manufacturing unit and highest capacity packing lines available.

In the 1980’s, a large complex for oil refining is set in Alcolea (Córdoba). As of December 2009, this refinery started producing 350 tons of oil per day.

Working as a subsidiary of the group, Refinería Andaluza S.A. has a large storage capacity of more than 20.000 tons, in addition to the 8.000 tons of storage at Los Yébenes plant in Toledo.

The past decades have seen important changes in the company, such as the official E.E.C. recognition of the Protected Origin Denomination “Montes de Toledo”, the vocation for the production and trade of organic olive oils, the use of technology in every area of the company, a permanent international stance in trade fairs and the continuous enlargement and improvement of Toledo`s industrial facilities to lessen operation costs and to best service its increasing clients around the world.

P.O.D. Montes de Toledo

P.O.D “Montes de Toledo” protects the authenticity of our products.

Working with the native olive variety of Cornicabra ever since the 50’s, Aceites Toledo has explored the contrasts offered by sierra and valley groves of Toledo Mountains, in central Spain.

Known for decades as “Toledo Type”, this characteristic olive oil belongs to a tradition of olive trees that goes back to the mediterranean cultures that inhabited the Iberian peninsula: Iberians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs. Most favourable conditions of climate and soil are the exceptional foundations of its quality, as well as its sole variety, the cornicabra, which originated in this region.

Our olive groves, most of them small, family-run farms, have limited productions (if compared to other olive areas of the Mediterranean), allowing the better care, the coddling of the fruit, to obtain one of the best quality extra virgin olive oils in the world.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the Mountains of Toledo is obtained at low temperatures with the exclusive use of physical means, so that it preserves the natural aroma and flavour of the fruit, untouched.

Gastronomically is ideal in crude. Its delicate aromas enhance the natural flavour of salads, dressings and sauces. Dishes, roasts and stews are highlighted whilst they become healthier.

Olive Oils sheltered by the Protected Origin Denomination (P.O.D.) Montes de Toledo must abide by the demanding statutory provisions established by this official institution. Requirements to be met cover every stage in the production process: farming of the olive trees, harvesting and transport of the olives, cold-pressing, storage and packing of the oils. Organoleptic and analytical characteristics of every lot are controlled as well.

P.O.D Montes de Toledo guarantees, then, the origin of the product, which is its main differentiation characteristic, as well as its traceability.

Corporate Social Responsibility (C.S.R.)

Aceites Toledo is a key reference in Corporate Social Responsibility.

In 1974, Aceites Toledo voluntarily started a major program focused on the development of sustainable agriculture and the protection of the rural environment in the province of Toledo. Said project involved the purchase of the historical land of Dehesa Monreal and its castle (XI century), an agricultural complex of 2.000 hectars dedicated to olive trees and cereal cultivation where a large number of endemic and endangered species of fauna and flora where thriving to survive. From then on, a constant flow of revenues from the company have been dedicated to Dehesa Monreal, now a days one of the most important private reserves of Nature in the world meeting various Ramsar criteria and having received numerous recognition awards.

This corporate philosophy is not a current fashion or a politically correct approach. It Is a true statement, a major example of what man’s action can do with nature: respect and improvement that leads to economical, social and environmental dimensions worth pursuing in order to benefit the next generations from a corporate ethical framework. We felt very proud when the Spanish Association for the Development of Corporate Funding awarded Aceites Toledo with the XIV AEDME Award to Environmental Policy and Corporate Social responsibility in the year 2.004, recognition that followed other given a year before by H.M the King of Spain to the founder of the Company, Mr. Juan Rubio Navarro, with the Fondena Award to Major Achievements in Nature Protection. Kosher OU.
For over 80 years the Orthodox Union has maintained the highest standard of kosher supervision. The logo indicates that a product may be consumed by all those who observe kosher dietary laws, as well as by many others who have special dietary requirements, such as Moslems and Seventh Day Adventists. It also serves as a guide to millions of individuals who are vegetarian or lactose intolerant. But in the public eye it has come to mean far more. Today, manufacturers and consumers alike view the logo as an independent verification of quality, integrity and purity.

IOOC (International Olive Oil Council).
Olive oils produced by Aceites Toledo are set to the standards put into force by the IOOC, an organization funded by the EEC and producing countries of the Mediterranean area. Created as consequence of the entry into force of the 1956 International Olive Oil Agreement, the IOOC carries out a series of measures and activities aimed at applying the provisions of the Agreement. The 1986 Agreement amended and extended by the Protocol of March 1993 is the latest contribution to the organisation of the international market for olive oil and table olives. Two food standards have also been developed in close cooperation with the Joint FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission. These are the Codex standard for olive oils and olive-pomace oils and the Codex standard for table olives. International standardisation is a way of ensuring that the methods of analysis and control used on this basis cannot be questioned. At the same time it helps to avoid arbitration disputes between users of different standards. It therefore undeniably contributes to providing guarantees in international trade relations.
